Episode 6 - Patti Paniccia
In Episode 6 of Beyond the Ocean we are joined by Patti Paniccia, Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center, SHACC, and adjust Professor of Law at Pepperdine University. Patty was one of the original co-founders of the world professional surfing circuit and competed on the first women’s professional surfing tour. Patti joins us on the podcast to share important insights on the history of surfing and gender inequality, as a way to help inform the next generation of surfing in surf parks in a more equitable way.
ABOUT Patti Paniccia:
Patti was one of the top-ranked surfers during the 70s and early 80s and was one of six women who competed on the first women’s world pro tour in 1976. She is a co-founder of pro-surfing, working as Director of the Women’s Division, alongside Fred Hemmings and Randy Rarick, to launch International Professional Surfing (IPS) which was a precursor to ASP and today’s WSL. A former CNN correspondent, Patti is also an adjunct law professor at Pepperdine Law School in Malibu where she teaches First Amendment Law, Employment Discrimination, and Gender and the Law

The Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC) is home to many of the world’s artifacts and memorabilia of the surfing community. A nonprofit organization, SHACC’s mission is to promote surfing while preserving its heritage and culture. Based in San Clemente, CA, the center is now celebrating its 20 year anniversary.
